Saddleback College
An aspiring graphic designer could join a company straight out of school or college as a junior design assistant and work their way up. However, being a qualified graphic designer, with a related degree or apprenticeship under your belt, can help to raise your skills and earning potential. Each year, students attend college for three semesters (Fall, Spring, and Summer). Throughout their study, employers appoint a devoted mentor to their apprentice. The emphasis is on digital print production and basic graphic design principles, as well as the most up-to-date graphic software and production procedures in line with the graphic industry's requirements. You are eager to contribute to a product that benefits the Bay Area design community.
SAMI Intern - Graphic Designer
They are exposed to a comprehensive curriculum taught by industry and studio professionals. Apprentices will be led through multiple assignments that focus on building their animation skills and prepare them for the Cycles Animation Team. The Program is a 12 week, full-time and paid opportunity and is covered by the Animation Guild. DreamWorks offers students and recent grads the opportunity to work alongside artists and storytellers in TV and Feature Animation. Interns take a deep dive into real productions, learn the 2D & CG pipeline and get a taste for what it is like to work in a creative environment.

BRIDGEGOOD provides six (6) hours of training, collaboration, and/or design activities each day. Program sessions are instructed by working professionals and the BRIDGEGOOD team members (Product Lead, Senior Designer, and Ops Manager). As with any 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, BRIDGEGOOD relies on donations, volunteers, and community support. That being said, we also welcome program participants to pay it forward once they secure employment. BRIDGEGOOD graduates have contributed as program mentors, donors, and connectors to important resources. Graphic designers may work for digital marketing companies, work in-house at big brands, or be freelance, but they all need to start somewhere.
Founded in 1880, the University of Southern California (USC) is the oldest private research university in Los Angeles and the State of California itself. Amongst the twenty-two schools that USC is made up of is the Roski School of Art and Design which cements USC as one of the best graphic design schools in Los Angeles. Roski offers both an undergraduate Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Design and a graduate Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Design.

To be eligible for a for an Apprenticeship, you need at least a high school diploma or GED and some basic storytelling, production, and digital technology skills. Once accepted into the program, we set you up on interviews -- and once hired, your Apprenticeship begins. Starting wages will generally be somewhere between $15 and $20 per hour. You also get time with an Arts2Work industry mentor who can support your creative and professional development. At the end of the year, the goal is that you love your job, your employer is thrilled with your work, and you are promoted into the position for which you’ve been training all year.

California State Polytechnic University Pomona—usually referred to as Cal Poly Pomona—is a public polytechnic university and one of the best graphic design colleges in Los Angeles. Founded in 1938, the school now has over 29,000 students across 147 degree options. Amongst these options is a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Graphic Design—meaning that students can become a graphic designer in Los Angeles with Cal Poly Pomona. At BRIDGEGOOD, the UX Design Apprenticeship is a 3-month tuition free program that provides student participants with training, real-world experience, and direct access to tech mentors. Up to twenty Bay Area artists and designers can participate in BRIDGEGOOD's hallmark 3-month program, which includes tuition-free access, hands-on instruction, and portfolio-building activities. BRIDGEGOOD has been offering a unique User Experience (UX) Design Apprenticeship to student designers of color seeking professional growth and skill-building opportunities for the past six years. In the tech industry, apprenticeships and internships are generally more common in STEM roles such as Cybersecurity, Data Science, and Software Engineering. This does not mean that apprenticeship programs in UI/UX don't exist. While not as common, there are plenty of great programs at some great companies that offer apprenticeships to future UX/UI designers.
You should be able to get a list of local businesses offering apprenticeships through your sixth form or college. After that, the process is similar to applying for a job, the company will state its entry requirements and you can go through the application process to see if it will be a good fit. However, not all industries currently offer official apprenticeships which adhere to a single standard, making it difficult for potential candidates to source, let alone apply for, a suitable apprenticeship.
One of the best schools for graphic design in Los Angeles, Chapman University was founded in Orange in 1861. Amongst the 11 schools that Chapman has to offer is the Wilkinson College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences which, amongst its various degree offerings, has a Bachelors of Fine Arts (BFA) in Graphic Design. Chapman’s Graphic Design degree is a combination of both exploratory and research-based processes, with students developing a professional graphic design portfolio throughout the course. As a graphic designer, you will need to accept that a rejection of your work isn’t a rejection of you as a person.
This program is rotational, which means that you will be mentored by a different person each month and will be exposed to a range of customer projects. Participants get extensive technical instruction, followed by three to six months of hands-on work experience to test and develop their abilities. One of the best things about graphic design is that it never stands still for a moment. Unfortunately, we do not offer housing and relocation assistance.

We not only target college level students and recent graduates but also look to junior/high school level students in an effort to educate and inspire the Gen Z population. This will be specified in the job description when applying to specific positions. No matter the avenue you choose, a lot will rest on your ability to evidence your talent and skills. For this, you will need to build up a unique and preferably diverse portfolio. A portfolio should display your suitability for a variety of jobs and commissions. As a Thoughtbot apprentice, you'll be partnered with a Thoughtbot mentor to create goals and develop your abilities. Working with your mentor, you'll expand on your previous expertise as a designer and hone your consulting abilities.
